Philadelphia Trip – April 2009

It was a bit of a surprise, but Alana received a call the first week of April that her Aunt Jill had died. After much consideration she decided to fly out to Philadelphia for the funeral, taking Tyler with her. They flew out the day before Easter and came back the following Tuesday. It would be Tyler’s first plane ride since we came back from China. He did an awesome job and is a great traveler. Although, he did decide that he like big planes and not small planes. The little prop plane ride from Santa Barbara to San Francisco was a little too loud for him. The only hiccup in the trip was the plane ride home. The plane was late leaving Philadelphia and then their was a medical emergency right before landing in San Francisco. Both of these unfortunate events caused them to miss their connecting flight to Santa Barbara, which happened to be the last flight of the night. On top of all this Tyler was nursing a cold accompanied by a fever and Alana was starting to catch it the night they spent at a hotel in San Francisco. Needless to say they were both very happy to be home Wednesday morning.

Besides the nightmarish flight home the trip was a good one. Alana had not be back to Philadelphia in almost 20 years and was happy to visit with everyone there.  It was a short sevice so most of the trip was spent just hanging out with the family. Alana got her cheesesteak and pretzel fix in. Tyler got to meet some of his cousins for the first time. He had a great time hanging out with Christian and Sophia and he and Christian seemed to hit it off right away. After a little bit of coaxing (and a couple of rounds of bowling) he warmed up to his Auntie Kari and Uncle Dee as well. Hopefully we will be able to see them all again soon.

Day 1 - 2

After a short layover in San Francisco the plane arrived in Philadelphia close to midnight. You think Tyler would have been exhausted, but once he saw Grandpa at the airport and Grandma at the hotel there was no getting him to sleep. The next day we met the cousins for dim sum and hung out at the hotel before a big family dinner.

We got some lunch during our layover in SFO. Tyler was still traumatized over the very loud small plane.

Still on California time.

Sophia’s adorable and she knows it!

Christian does his best Robert Pattinson pose.

Tyler had to learn to share Grandpa’s time with Sophia.

Grandpa was still on California time too.

The kids get up close and personal with the Backyardigans in our hotel room.

Day 3

The service was about mid-morning followed by a lunch. Afterwards Auntie Kim and Kari, Uncle Dee and Alana decided to take Tyler to have some fun at Dave and Buster’s. There Tyler finally got to try bowling for the first time after  saying over and over that he wanted to go bowling. And yes, he actually got a strike his first time out.

Time to wake up kiddo!

Good form Dee.

Bad form Kim.

Do I have to take this picture Mommy?

Ready, set, go!

Strike! Strike!

Can you say ham?

Day 4

The last day in Philly. After breakfast at Reading Terminal Alana went off with her cousin Frances to get her hair done while Grandma and Grandpa took Tyler around to see the sights. It was a nice slow day before the craziness of the trip home.

Just a couple of Reading Terminal pics.
